Previously published as Anesthesia Basics for Medical Students and Resident Rotators, 2nd Ed. by John Carl Lundell.Once again, Dr. Lundell has managed to create a book that encapsulates some of the most important concepts for students of anesthesia while still managing to allow his own voice to show through. The resulting Anesthesia Basics for Medical Students and Resident Rotators, 2nd Ed. (revised) is quite readable and is less formal than the typical textbook. It can still be read in an afternoon without inducing general anesthesia in the readers. The 2nd edition also serves to update Anesthesia Basics for Perioperative Nurses--although at a slightly more detailed level. In addition to several new illustrations and photos, this new edition includes up to date information on topics including pre-operative fasting and GLP-1 Agonists, Obstructive Sleep Apnea/STOP BANG screening, and Post Operative Cognitive Dysfunction. There's also more information on difficult intubation and intraoperative monitoring including quantitative twitch monitoring and muscle relaxation reversal. The section on post operative nausea and vomiting (PONV) has been greatly expanded to include evaluation of risk factors as well as a detailed list of classes of drugs which can be used to prevent and treat PONV. New information about the environmental impact of volatile anesthetics has been added to the chapter on volatile anesthetics. The section on positions of peril now includes risks of intubating patients with an airborne infectious disease (e.g. COVID) and the psychological risks of practicing in an under-manned, over-stressed specialty (e.g. burn-out).Overall, still a good primer for beginning students or residents from other specialties who wish to learn Anesthesia Basics.
